Become a Member (for Dog Trainers)

What You'll Need

  • Application documents [application, Code of Ethics, Trademark Usage Rules and a $15 non-refundable fee (that is applied to your membership fee if you are accepted)]
  • Two References from an Animal Care Expert (Vet, Professional Dog Trainer, College Professor)
  • A qualifying score on the OS Certification Exam (exam is sent via email and submitted online)
  • In some cases an OS Phone Interview, video of you teaching, or additional test questions may be required

Now certifying trainers throughout the United States.

The Application Process

Step 1: Review Your Eligibility

  • Are you a Positive Reinforcement Trainer who does not use choke, shock or prong collars; or force or intimidation training methods?
  • Do you have a high school diploma or equivalent?
  • Do you have 3 years of experience training puppies as a lead instructor (not apprentice)?
  • Do you have a good understanding of:
    1. Class instruction techniques
    2. Normal puppy development
    3. Humane dog training techniques (i.e. lure to sit)
    4. General husbandry (i.e. vaccinations)
    5. Behavioral knowledge (i.e. stress signs)
    6. Learning theory
  • Can you obtain two references from an Animal Care Expert?
  • Do you have a proven history of commitment to continuing education? Have you attended a minimum of five dog training and/or behavior seminars in the past 3 years?
  • Are you committed to professional and ethical business practices and conduct?
  • Do you carry business insurance or are you covered by an employer policy?

Yes on all counts? You're ready for step 2.

Step 2: Submit Your Application

There's a $15 non-refundable application fee. The money will be applied to your membership fee of $225 if you are accepted. You can submit your application one of three ways:

  1. Fill the application out online with electronic payment (coming soon!)
  2. Download the application and mail it with $15 check (payable to Operation Socialization LLC) to:

  3. Download the application and fax it to 800-395-9643. Pay by calling 703-310-4443 and giving us your credit card information.

Step 3: Submit Your Reference Forms

Download our Certification & Membership Reference Forms and give them to two Animal Care Experts. We accept references from veterinarians, professional dog trainers and college professors. You can submit your references one of two ways:

  1. Download the reference form and ask your reference provider to give it back to you in a sealed envelope (written signature over the sealed flap) and mail it to:

  2. Download the reference form and ask your reference provider to mail it to us directly at the address above or fax it to us directly at 800-395-9643.

Please keep in mind that you will receive a faster response from us if we receive your materials all together.

Step 4: Complete The Online Entrance Exam

  • When your application is complete, we email you to schedule your online exam. The exam link will be emailed to you on the morning of your scheduled exam date. You have 90 minutes to complete the exam from the time you click on the exam link (estimated time required is 30 minutes) and the exam must be completed before 11:59 pm that day.
  • If you get a passing mark of 95% or more, an OS representative will email your results, a link for payment and a contract for you to sign. Once we have received your signed contract and payment we will send you your Dog Trainer Action Kit and add you to the OS Certified Trainer Directory.
  • In certain cases a phone interview, video of you teaching, or additional test questions may also be required. Should this occur, and OS representative will contact you to schedule the interview or ask for additional materials.

Step 5: Phone Interview (Case by Case)

  • If you receive a qualifying score of 95% or more on your phone interview, an OS representative will email you your results and a link for payment. (Results will not be conveyed during the interview).
